KALAYAAN… KAIBIGAN Tanda mo pa ba si Richie Fernando? Nadalaw ko sa Cambodia ang kanyang bantayog. Nadaanan ko rin sa QC ang kanyang puntod, sa sementeryo ng mga Heswita. Para sa akin, isa siyang makabagong bayani ng pananampalataya, isang banal. Pinoy na seminaristang Heswita noon si Richie na naglingkod sa Cambodia kasama ang mga kabataang biktima ng giyera, lalo na ang mga nasabugan ng bomba. Nang ang isang kabataan ay nagwala, nagbanta itong pasasabugin ang mga kaklase sa hawak niyang granada. Agad na nilundag ni Richie ang kabataan upang iligtas ang lahat. Sa katawan ni Richie sumabog ang granada, at dumanak ang dugong Pinoy para sa mga kaibigang Cambodian. Ngayon ay pista ng kalayaan at pagkakaibigan. Tuwing maririnig natin ang “Katawan ni Kristo” di ba madalas iniisip natin Komunyon, sakramento, o simbahan bilang kanyang Katawan? FREE AND FRIENDLY Remember Richie Fernando? When I visited Cambodia many years ago, I made it a point to visit the memorial of Richie. Passing by the Jesuit cemetery in Quezon City, I dropped by to look for his tomb there. He is still to me, a modern hero of faith, a saint. Richie was a Filipino Jesuit seminarian who was sent to Cambodia to work with young former victims of war, specially those maimed by landmines. When one youth’s angst and depression burst into extreme anger, he threatened to blow up his classmates with a hand grenade. Richie quickly jumped on the man snatching the grenade and shielding the others. The grenade exploded on Richie’s body and his Filipino blood flowed for his Cambodian friends. Today’s feast is a feast of freedom and friendship. When we think of the Body of Christ, do we not only think of Communion, adoration chapel, or the church as his mystical body? The Eucharist is indeed the great sacrament of unity and love.

SIMPLE AT MALALIM Ang talakayan tungkol sa Diyos ay simple. Di ba siya ay pag-ibig? Katotohanan? Pagkahabag? Pero ang talakayan sa Santissima Trinidad ay hindi ganun kasimple. Nakakahilo. Nagdudulot ng sakit ng ulo, pagka-sabaw, debate, duda at pagtanggi. Walang problema sa Diyos na simple. Nagsisimula ang problema kapag tila hindi na simple ang Diyos. Paano magiging isa ang tatlo? Paano magiging tatlo ang isa? Paano magiging Diyos ang isang namatay sa krus? Paano naging Diyos ang isang ibon?! Kaydami nang nagsabi na nagpalit sila ng relihyon kasi hindi nila maintindihan o maipaliwanag ang pinaniniwalaan nila. Buti pa ang Iglesia ni Cristo, isang Diyos, tuldok! Buti pa ang Muslim, isang Diyos, sapul! Ang mga walang Diyos, lalong mabuti pa – walang problema, boom panis! Pero ang pagsasaliksik sa Diyos ay pagpasok sa katotohanan. SIMPLE AND COMPLEX Talk about God is simple. God is love. God is truth. God is mercy.  But talk about the Trinity is not simple. It sends people into a frenzy. It produces headaches, migraines, debates, doubts, and denial. We do not have a problem with a simple God. Our problem starts when that God does not seem simple at all. How can one be three? How can three be one? How can a crucified man claim to be God? Can a bird be divine?! I heard people say that they ditched the doctrine of the Trinity because they couldn’t understand it.   KAPAYAPAAN, PAGPAPATAWAD Ang taluktok ng Pagkabuhay ay ang kapistahang ito ng Pagdating ng Espritu Santo. Ipinangako ni Hesus, ang Espiritu ay isinugo ng Ama sa pamamagitan ng Anak sa mga alagad at sa  sambayanan. PEACE, FORGIVENESS The crowning glory of Easter is this feast of Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit. Promised by Jesus, the Spirit was sent by the Father through the Son to the apostles and the waiting community of the faithful. While a more public Pentecost is related to us by the Acts of the Apostles, a more intimate and private reception of the Holy Spirit happened on the very day of the Resurrection, as narrated in the gospel of John. The Lord Jesus appeared to the fearful apostles in the Upper Room. Jesus’ first act towards them was to grant the gift of peace. Why peace? The Lord sensed the terror in the hearts of his apostles. Who would not be afraid? The apostles must be so terrified at the thought that the Jewish leaders were now going after them. Jesus’ gift of peace flowed like a balm of love and assurance.
