UNANG LINGGO NG ADBIYENTO A

Image
Mahimbing

1st SUNDAY OF ADVENT A

Image
CLINGING TO LOVE Filipinos mark their year by remembering the special challenges of each situation: … it’s your birthday again; grow up! … you’re graduating next year?; road to independence! … Holy Week is coming; time to get the clan ready for a reunion! … it’s almost Christmas; feel the love in the air! Yes, it’s the first week of Advent; we will hear messages on waiting, on vigilance, on staying awake! Paul tells the Romans: it’s now the hour to stay awake. The Lord Jesus tells us in the gospel of Matthew: be prepared; the Master comes when you least expect him. What is this thing about keeping awake, this waiting for something, or more precisely, for someone? It’s definitely not literal sleeplessness. It is a call to a waiting of the heart. It is a call to “feel the love” again! My cousin posted the picture of her daughter on social media. The g

KRISTONG HARI, K

Image

CHRIST THE KING, C

Image
INVERTED KINGDOM The rulers didn’t get it: "if he is the Christ, why can’t he save himself?" … is not the Christ strong, brave, and mighty to defeat our enemies? The soldiers too, didn’t get it: "if you are King of the Jews save yourself!" …for did they not hear about his miracles and prophecies circulating around town? One of the criminals didn’t get it as well: "save yourself, save us too!" …he was thinking of a God that gives escape, comfort, freedom from pain. This is the way we still think of God today: ...a powerful God should prevent viruses, storms, earthquakes and wars; ...a wonder-working God should transform our pain into pleasure, our tears into laughter; ...a God of abundance should provide us money, houses, jobs, businesses and a lot of success. If this is not the God we get, maybe he is no God at all! Jesus spoke o

PAGHARAP SA WAKAS May giyera sa Syria. Ano naman paki natin dito? May lindol sa Mindanao. Natakot ba tayo? Bumagyo sa Tokyo. Natigatig ka ba? Maraming pinapatay, pinalalayas, inaapi.

33RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME C

HOW TO FACE THE END There is a war in Syria. Does it affect us? There is an earthquake in Mindanao? Did it frighten us? A violent storm swept through Tokyo? Were we disturbed? People are getting killed, pushed away, maltreated everywhere. What do we care? The Lord Jesus speaks of the things that must happen in the world before the end. Wars, calamities, injustices, violence… It doesn’t affect us though because we feel they are so far from our experience. But these things do happen near us too… There are wars between family members.  There are tremors in relationships with co-workers and friends. There are bumps along the road of our dreams, our health, our careers. People hate us, malign us, threaten us. and we do not feel peace… These things do not signal the end of the world but they do predict the end of “our” world. And we feel exposed, weak, and vulnerable. A lady

PAALAM… PAGBATI! Nagsimula akong i-pray over siya.

32ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME C

GOODBYE… GREETINGS! There she lay on the hospital bed, in the intensive care unit… her face looked the same, except slightly disfigured by the tube inside her mouth.  I moved closer so she could hear me. The nurse said she was certain the only faculty still active in her was her hearing. I introduced myself as her long-lost friend and told her how happy I was to see her again and to know she was well taken care of.  What happened next convinced me she really did hear and recognize my voice. She moved her upper body upwards as if wanting to welcome me and hug me.  I acknowledged her efforts and started praying for her. In the middle of the prayer, I saw a precious, little tear fall from her right eye. A week after the visit, my friend Eileen, was back where she started… in  the heart of God, blissful in the presence of the Lord she loved and served so well in her family, in her church, and in her community. This is my
