HUWAG GAYA-GAYA Biglang napasigaw ang nanay ng estudyanteng napatalsik sa pamantasan dahil siniraan at dinungisan niya sa social media ang pangalan ng mga guro niya: Hindi ba sabi kong tigilan mong gayahin yang Vice Ganda na yan? Walang maidudulot na maganda ang pagsunod at panggagaya mo sa kanya! Isa pang kabataan ang habang pinagagalitan ng kanyang mga magulang dahil sa pagmumura sa kaibigan niya sa social media din, ang nangatuwiran: kung ang presidente nga ng Pilipinas laging nagmumura, ako pa ba ang hindi puwede? Ang Mabuting Balita ay halaw sa bahagi ng sulat ni Mateo laban sa mga Pariseo. Ang buong kabanata 23 ay totoong marahas sa tono kaya ang unang bahagi lang ang binasa natin. TO THE CEMETERY WITH LOVE Much of the attention given to these days before November 1 and 2 focus on the sense of horror often associated with the remembrance of the dead. Just look around at the mall or store designs or notice the children parading in costumes around villages, in imitation of the foreign tradition of Halloween. PAANO MAGMAHAL Nagninilay tayo ngayon sa tugon ng Panginoon sa isa pang “patibong” na tanong ng mga Pariseo, ngayon naman, tungkol sa pinakadakilang utos sa batas. Ang simpleng sagot ng Panginoon – pag-ibig; ganap at buong pag-aalay ng pag-ibig na ipakikita sa dalawang paraan: pag-ibig sa Diyos at sa kapwa (Mt. 22). Paano ba dapat umibig? HOW TO LOVE Today we reflect on the reply of the Lord Jesus to another “trap” question of the Pharisees, this time about the greatest commandment in the law. The Lord gives simply the response – love, one, total donation of love expressed in two ways: love of God and love of neighbor (Mt 22). But how do we love? How should love be shown? Jesus clarifies this when he mentions the commandment to love God. Let us reflect on the way to love the Lord, and through him, our neighbor: “with all your heart”: The heart is love's symbol. The heart refers to the center of the person, from which flows affection and compassion. In the Scriptures, the heart is not only the deepest core but the totality of the person himself. Therefore, to love is to be totally involved, from the center going out. There is only heart, and so love must have only one focus, direction and object. ALL BUT A TRAP Throughout history, Christians have been baffled by the relationship between their faith and their life context, between faith and reason, between loyalty to the state and fidelity to the church. Today's gospel (Mt 22) revisits what is now a very relevant topic for reflection. In the gospel, the Lord Jesus, replying to the disciples of the Pharisees, says: Give to Cesar what belongs to Cesar, and to God what belongs to God! Cesar or the emperor represents the earthly power that governed Israel at that time. The Lord clearly tells the people that they must positively contribute to society by becoming good citizens. If it means paying taxes, which are just and needed for the welfare of all, then by all means, give it to Cesar. In that way, followers of Christ will be known as supporters of whatever is good that is found in human and social relationships. TARA NA SA KASALAN! Mas simple ngayon ang mga kasalan kaysa noong una na buong baryo at lahat ng kamag-anak ay inaasahang dadalo kahit walang imbitasyon. HEAR COMES THE BRIDE! Today weddings are much simpler than before, when entire villages and even distant relatives were “expected” to join without formal invitations. Then when neighbors or relatives fail to show up, the hosts feel slighted. Now people will hesitate to come uninvited since there is a fixed guest list that is normally limited to the closest family and friends.  The Gospel today (Mt 22) portrays the Kingdom of God with the imagery of a lavish, rural, open banquet of ancient times. The king sends his messengers to fetch his guests. He feels bad that some cannot come and even resorts to punishment for their failure to show up. Then he invites just about anybody he can find. When finally the banquet starts, the king notices those who are not dressed up for the occasion. These too, he punishes. --> LOVE WILL FIND A WAY The gospel today is painted with gloom. It is a story of betrayal, a portrait of violence, an expression of hatred, at a plot for greed. The good landowner suddenly realizes how wicked his tenants are. They do not want to share the harvest with him; they refuse to listen to his messengers; they hate his only Son; and they have no respect for his kindness and generosity. What landowner would not feel react with self-defense? What father would not respond with revenge for the death of his son? What person would not vow to stop trust others again? The leaders of Israel, the tenants, behaved in a way that directly countered the will of God, the owner of the vineyard. In order to frustrate the plans of God for the kingdom, they even had to eliminate the Son, sending a harsh message of grief to the Father’s heart.
