TRUE BREAD IS BETTER JN 6: 24-35       Filipinos are fond of imitation. They are cheap, affordable and come close to the real thing. In Baguio where they have the famous ube jam from the “Good Shepherd,” there is also one called “Like the Good Shepherd.” McDonald’s fries had a competitor in Mang Donald’s fries. In one location where there was a 7-11 store, across was a store called 8-12 .   The Jews ate the bread Jesus multiplied and they remembered the bread or manna their ancestors ate in the desert. Coming to Jesus, they thought he gave them the same bread and will still give them the same. Jesus explains that in fact, he is preparing for them something totally different and entirely new.   That bread in the desert was inauthentic bread, a mere imitation of what was to come, and a temporary relief for the grumbling stomach. The True Bread gives life unending, comes from God in heaven, and referred not to baked dough, but to him personally.

NAKITA NILA ANG “TANDA” JN 6: 1-15   thanks to fr tam nguyen!

THEY SAW THE “SIGN” Jn 6; 1-15   fr tam nguyen's photo; thanks!     My friend is a Protestant mom who regularly attends Mass with her Catholic husband and kids. She told me that she always receives Communion with her family. Surprised, I asked if she believes that in doing so, she receives the Body and Blood of Christ. She replied that she believes she receives the “symbol” of the body of Christ and wonders how the Bread is the “real” Body of the Lord.   Mark’s Gospel readings give way to John’s Gospel beginning this Sunday as we reflect on the profound and true meaning of the Eucharist for us. When Jesus fed the multitudes, the people “saw the sign” (Jn 6:14), according to John. So let us reflect on the difference between a s ymbol and a sign according to the Catholic understanding of these words (since some people use these words in a different sense).   A symbol is a something that points to something else; it is a reminder. A heart-shape is a

PAHINGA PAHINGA DIN PAG MAY TIME..

ALL WORK AND NO PLAY… Mk 6: 30-34   thanks, fr tam nguyen     When I was younger I heard the advice: “Listen to your body.” Of course, I rarely did! However, it is undeniable that our body speaks. It tells us that it is excited and fired up for work. It signals to us when it is joyful, energetic, and inspired. It tells us when it is hungry, sleepy, sick or tired.   It is just remarkable how the Lord Jesus recognized the signals of the body. When his apostles returned from mission, he immediately told them: “Rest a little…” Maybe he observed their bodies and saw how dirty, smelly, exhausted and famished they were. The apostles were serious missionaries and now as they came back, all they needed were some food and a warm bed.   How interesting our bodies truly are. These are not just part of who we are; it’s who we are when people see us! That is why today, we say that we need to love and accept our bodies, in whatever shape, color or condition they come

POWERFUL MISSION Mk 6: 7-13       When Fr Suarez, the healing priest was alive, a person noticed that he would wave his hand at people he met though he did not know them. When asked why he was doing this, he simply replied that people reported that when he waved at them, they were instantly cured of their diseases.   Our Lord Jesus did not only send out apostles to do mission; he also invested them with power, with authority over evil spirits! What great power! But how could they accomplish such great works when they had nothing? Remember, Jesus gave only one advice: no food, no sack, no money. No packed lunch or snacks. No backpack for clothes or toiletries. No cash, credit card, no Gcash!   And yet, the apostles reported success over many demons and the number of those they healed were many! How can people with nothing do amazing things? The answer is simple: because they had nothing, because they knew they were nothing, it is Jesus who worked thro

THE DISEASE OF DISCRIMINATION Mk 6: 1-6       When a young man was ordained a priest, his relatives from the distaff side (his mother’s side) greatly rejoiced. However some of his relatives from his father’s side showed surprising indifference. Why? Because they knew his father well – that he was a rebellious son in his youth, who did not finish college, and who worked as a manual laborer. As these relatives looked down on the father, so they did the same now on the son even though he was now a priest.   Jesus experienced a similar episode in his life when his neighbors, who may have included some relatives, could not accept that he was preaching God’s Word (Mk 6). They could not bring themselves to admire a humble carpenter, the son of Mary a simple woman, and whose brothers and sisters (actually cousins) were not people of exalted position in town. Jesus felt pain in his heart as he realized how the people he loved closed their hearts to his presence and
