  BASTA MANALIG LANG…       Noong isang araw, sa kwentuhan ay naitanong ng isang kaibigan ang dahilan at pinagmumulan ng pagdurusa ng mga tao lalo na sa gitna ng pandemyang ito. Nasabi kong hindi kalooban ng Diyos ang paghihirap ng tao. Umayon naman siya. At mismong ang unang pagbasa ang nagtuturo nito: Ang kamatayan ay hindi likha ng Diyos, ang pagkamatay ng alinmang may buhay ay hindi niya ikinalulugod (Karunungan 1).   Ito ay bagamat kita din nating pinapayagan ng Diyos na dumaan ang tao sa mga pagsubok sa buhay. Ang panahon natin ay patunay nito dahil maraming tao, kasama tayo, ay dumaranas ng hirap, sakit, kawalan at dusa. Malaki ang epekto sa lahat, at hindi lang pinansyal kundi sa personal, pamilya, ugnayan, kalusugan at maging sa esprirituwal na paraan.   At dahil nga pinapayagan ng Diyos ang pagdurusa, kaydami din tuloy na nag-iisip at nagtatanong kung talaga nga bang nagmamalasakit o nagmamahal sa atin ang Panginoon.   JUST HAVE FAITH       Just the other day, I was talking to a friend and he asked about the reason and origin of suffering specially as so many people today endure many trials due to the pandemic. At one point, I said that suffering is not God’s purpose for our lives. He agreed. And so does the first reading today teach it: God did not make death and he does not rejoice in the destruction of his beloved creatures made in his image (Wis 1).   However it is a fact that God allows people to go through trying moments in their lives. The times we are living in is a testimony to so many people’s, including our own, inconvenience, hardship and sufferings. We are all affected in a big way, and not only financially, but in terms of personal, relational, family, health, and even spiritual matters.   The fact that God allows these to happen make people think and question whether he is truly concerned, whether he truly loves us.   PERO BAKIT?   Mk 4: 35-41       Ang hirap ng paksa ngayon – pagdurusa! Sinabi ng Diyos kay Job (Job 38) na ang dahilan ng paghihirap ay lampas sa katalinuhan ng tao. Lahat tayo dumadanas ng hirap. Pilit nating nilulutas ang pagdurusa. Pero patuloy itong nagaganap. At kahit sumigaw tayo ng “Bakit?” walang tugon na matatanggap.   Ang ilang sanhi ng pagdurusa ay madaling makita: kapabayaan, kadamutan, kayabangan, katamaran, o mga kalamidad ng kalikasan. Pero may ilang pagdurusa na ang hirap unawain, tulad ng bakit nagdurusa ang mga walang malay, o bakit walang tigil ang dating ng pagsubok sa buhay, o bakit kahit ano ang gawin natin ay dumarating ang pagbagsak at pagkalugmok natin. Hindi maiwasang magtanong ng “bakit” dahil ito ang tanong na naghahanap ng kasagutan.   Ayon sa pananampalataya, may hiwaga ng kasamaan, hiwaga ng pagdurusa o “ mysterium iniquitatis .” Ang pagdurusa ba ay dumarating para tayo linisin, parusahan, hamunin, takutin, o panghinaan ng

  BUT WHY? Mk 4: 35-41        This is a very difficult topic for reflection – suffering! God tells Job (Job 38) that the reason behind suffering is off limits to human intelligence. Everybody suffers. We try to remedy suffering. And yet, it still happens. And when we ask “why,” no answer is forthcoming.   Some causes of suffering are easy to see: negligence, selfishness, pride, laziness, or natural calamities. But some are just too unclear to fathom, as for instance when innocents suffer disease or oppression, or when personal disasters follow in succession rendering one helpless, or when despite our best efforts we are met with failures and disappointments. One cannot help but ask “why” because it is the question that really begs for an answer.   Faith tells us that in the world, there is a mystery of evil, a mystery of suffering, a mysterium iniquitatis . Is suffering here to purify us, to punish us, to challenge us, to frighten us, to make us cry and

  ANG DIYOS AY PLANTITO MK 4: 26-34       Kapwa unang pagbasa (Ezek 17) at ang Mabuting Balita (Mk 4) ang nag-udyok sa akin na isipin ang Diyos bilang isang plantito (tawag sa mga biglang naging plant-lovers nitong pandemic). Dahil sa pagkabagot, ang mga Pinoy ay bumaling sa paghahalaman - bagong libangan – at naging plantito at plantita. Dito natuklasan nating masarap palang mag relax habang nag-aalaga ng kalikasan at pinahahalagahan ang kagandahan nito lalo na sa sariling bakuran.   Sabi ni Ezekiel, ang Diyos ay isang plantito na pumitas ng isang sanga, itinanim ito at pinayabong sa isang malaking puno. May green thumb pala ang Diyos! Ang Panginoong Hesus naman ay nagkuwento ng mga talinghaga tungkol sa mga halamang mahiwagang tumutubo kahit sa pagtulog ng magsasaka.   GOD’S GREEN THUMB Mk 4: 26-34       Both the first reading (Ezek. 17) and the Gospel today (Mk. 4) made me visualize God as a modern-day plantito (a trending Filipino term born of the lockdown experience, meaning plant-lover). Bored during quarantine, Filipinos turned their attention on a new hobby – gardening, and became plantitos and plantitas . In so doing they discovered a new way to relax by caring for nature and appreciating its beauty in their backyard.   Ezekiel describes God as an expert plantito who tears a branch, plants it and makes it grow into a mighty tree. God is the original green thumb! The Lord Jesus shares parables that show plants mysteriously growing independently of the farmer. It is God who gives life to plants and to the whole of creation.   I think there are two lessons we can learn from the Scriptures. Sa dami ng kanyang sinabi, binigyang diin niyang nawalan siya ng trabaho dahil sa lockdown. Nang bumalik ako sa bahay, napansin kong nandun pa rin siya sa gate.   REMEDY FOR HUNGRY SOULS       I was surprised when a man stopped by our gate to chat. He talked about many things but specially how he lost his regular job and couldn’t even find a new one due to the lockdowns. As I returned to my desk to finish some paper work, the man continued to linger at the gate. I asked if he needed or wanted to say something and he said he didn’t. Finally, he left.   It dawned on me that the man was too shy to ask. I looked into my cabinet and took out some food, then sent him a text to get them. In a minute he was back and happily took what I managed to give.   Hunger is real; poverty is real in these worsening crisis of the pandemic. Families are getting hungry. People appreciate what little food they can get for free. But sometimes we are so insensitive that we cannot immediately feel our neighbor’s need.   Jesus was totally absorbed with the situation of his brothers and sisters.
