5TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME B

HE LIFTS UP THE BURDEN…

 


 

 

Getting up in the morning is one of the most difficult things for most people to do. What if you expect nothing of the new day but hardness and boredom? The first reading from Job (ch 7) very accurately describes the restless nights of a person in distress, and the hopelessness with which he greets each new day. The Gospel (Mk 1) highlights the sickness of Peter’s mother-in-law, and of the many ill and possessed people in the town as Jesus came visiting.

 

Jesus is the answer to the questions of Job. Jesus’ love and compassion for us gives meaning even to our daily sufferings. Knowing that he is near makes us look with hope beyond the present difficulties we contend with. As Jesus healed peters mother-in-law, he also shared the gift of wellness to all those who came knocking at the door and begging for healing and peace.

 

A young man was diagnosed with incurable disease and the doctors told the parents to prepare for the worse, and even to break the news to the boy about his real situation. The parents were crying and filled with grief as they explained slowly to their son the doctors’ dire prediction. To their surprise, young man serenely told the parents not to cry but only to continue to pray and to hope because in God there is always hope.

 

I believe the young man, who knew the torture of physical suffering on a daily basis, has met the Lord in prayer and in personal conviction. Life is boring, even if we are blessed with all material comforts, if we have not met the Lord. But life is exciting and joyful, even in the midst of many challenges, if we know the Lord is near to listen to us, to help us, and to accompany us in our journey.

      PADRE MARIANO GOMES  (Gomez, ayon sa kanyang orihinal na apelyido)       Isinilang si Padre Gomez sa Santa Cruz, Maynila noong Agosto 2, 1799. Itinuturing siyang isang tornatrás o torna atrás o iyong may magkahalong dugo na Indio, Intsik at Kastila; karaniwang ang ama ay Kastila at ang ina ay mestisang Intsik. Ang kanyang mga magulang ay sina Alejandro Francisco Gomez at Martina Custodio.   Pumasok siya sa mga paaralang Letran at UST. Naghanda naman siya sa pagpapari sa Seminaryo ng Maynila na ngayon ay San Carlos.   Taong 1824 nang maging parish priest si Fr Gomes ng Bacoor, Cavite.
