SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST BLESSED TRINITY, B
Year
after year, we go through the feast that takes our breath away, the feast that
keeps our mouth agape in silence for fear that we may not really be able to
understand it or explain it. This feast is the Solemnity of the Most Blessed
Trinity.
As
Catholics, we share in the universal faith conviction of all Christians, that
the one God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Not one God, period. But one God, in Three Divine Persons
because this was how Jesus revealed God.
This is also how we expereince God relating to us in lively and powerful
ways – as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
At
times, I come across a preacher, Quiboloy by name, who rants violently at what
he calls the false doctrine of the “Holy Three.” In the Bible he says, there is only the Holy One. His twisted reasoning is easy to spot.
Christians, especially Catholics do not speak about a “Holy Three,” never. We believe in the “Holy One” but who
Jesus revealed is not alone. He is one because in him is the unity of
Father-Son-and-Holy Spirit. By the
way, Quiboloy hates the Trinity because it will destroy his primary aim – he
wants to be called, considered and revered as the appointed Son of God. There
is no such thing “appointed son” in the Bible!
In
the movie “The Reluctant Saint,” a bishop was conversing with St. Joseph
Cupertino. He said that he found it difficult to understand and explain the
Trinity. But St. Joseph perceived the Trinity in even simpler way. Not as a
doctrine but as an experience of God’s love. The bishop lamented that it is really the simple heart that
truly finds the meaning of the Trinity.
The
Trinity is a doctrine yes, but above all, the Trinity is a “family” of
love. As such, we can only understand
it if we begin to experience being part of this family, if we open our hearts
to the love of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit in our lives. And this Sunday, we are not in church
to dissect a lofty topic. We are here to partake of the family of God. That it why in the second reading, St.
Paul reminds us that we become part of the family of God: For all who are led
by the Spirit of God are children of God (Rom. 8: 14).
Yes,
God is the one family of Three Persons united in the strongest possible love. If we believed the Trinity, if we open
our hearts to the expereince of this love, we truly feel what it means to be
part of this great family.
