CONTRIBUTIONS OF POPE BENEDICT XVI TO NEW EVANGELIZATION

ECHOES OF NEW EVANGELIZATION

IN THE MAGISTERIAL PRONOUNCEMENTS OF

POPE BENEDICT XVI

I. INTRODUCTION

Pope Benedict XVI inherited the See of Peter from the Saint Pope John Paul II, the man with whom he closely collaborated and whom he served in the sensitive capacity as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. After the death of John Paul II, the ascent of Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger to the office of the universal pastor of the Catholic Church did not surprise many.[1]  In fact, it was widely believed that there would be a sense of continuity between the two papacies.

One of the features of previous papacy that people expected Pope Benedict XVI to follow through was the theme of New Evangelization, a favorite catch phrase of the late John Paul.  In this, the new pope did not disappoint since he certainly acted in favor of New Evangelization.  In his writings, decisions, and convocations, the theme was close to his mind and heart.

In this paper, the three encyclicals published under Pope Benedict XVI will be scrutinized against the understanding of the New Evangelization as discussed by the Synod of Bishops on the same theme called by the same pope prior to his surprised resignation on February 11, 2013.  In doing this, it is hoped that there can be a better appreciation of the pope’s understanding of the New Evangelization as well as a clearer response to his invitation to continue along this path of modern ecclesial challenge.

[1] Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger became Pope Benedict XVI on April 19, 2005.
