INTRODUCTION Pope Benedict XVI inherited the See of Peter from the Saint Pope John Paul II, the man with whom he closely collaborated and whom he served in the sensitive capacity as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. After the death of John Paul II, the ascent of Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger to the office of the universal pastor of the Catholic Church did not surprise many.
