--> HIWAGA NG PAGDURUSA Pangkalahatang karanasan ito. Kung nadarama ng isang tao sa kanyang buto, sa iba naman dama sa puso. Habang nangyayari sa katandaan ng isa, ganun din naman nagaganap ito sa kabataan ng panahon para sa isang tao pa. Karaniwang tadhana ito ng lahat ng tao na nag-uugnay sa ating mga buhay – mayaman o mahirap, makapangyarihan o aba, matalino o mangmang, malakas o mahina. Tinutukoy sa mga pagbasa ang kaakibat na ito ng buhay – pasakit at pagdurusa. Inilalahad sa Aklat ni Job ang mga biyaya sa kabataan niya, ang mga pagsubok na sumunod at mga pagdurusang kumitil ng kanyang kaligayahan, at sa huli, ang katubusan na dala ng biyaya ng Diyos kay Job. Ito ang aklat na tahasang nagsaliksik ng sagot sa katanungan ukol sa problema ng kasamaan. Kung mabuti ang Diyos, bakit pinababayaan niya ang pagdurusa? Kung may kinalaman ang paghihirap sa kasalanan, bakit pati mabubuting tao ay nakakaranas nito? Sino kaya sa atin ang hindi maka

--> ENIGMA OF SUFFERING It is a universal experience. A one person feels it in his aching bones, another feels it in his broken heart. One goes through it in his mature years while the other sustains it in his tender years of life. It is the common lot of all humanity and one that unites people in one destiny – rich and poor, powerful and lowly, educated and unlettered, strong and weak. The readings today point to this earthly phenomenon – pain and suffering in life. The Book of Job details the blessings of Job’s early life, the travails that followed and the unthinkable sufferings that conspired against his happiness and well-being, and the redemption of his situation by the sheer grace of God. This is the most direct biblical text trying to find a solution to the problem of evil. If God is good, why is there suffering in the world? --> SPOKESMAN OF THE LIVING WORD The first reading today gives us a short but enlightening history of prophecy in Israel. Deuteronomy 18 speaks of the sentiments of the people to whom the Lord speaks. The people are not ready to speak to God face to face, for fear that they will perish. They were also afraid of directly hearing the divine voice or the great marvelous works of God. Instead, they begged God to send a mediator, a middleman, a spokesman. That man is the prophet. Israel had many prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Though they carried God’s words to the people, they suffered horribly from unbelieving and stubborn hearts. Often the people listened selectively to the message that suited them most. They ignored and even persecuted the prophets who spoke of the hard, painful truth. Isaiah 42 also speaks of the ideal prophet, his tasks, his responsibilities and his burdens. This history of prophecy will find its pinnacle in

TAGAPAGPAHAYAG NG BUHAY NA SALITA Sa unang pagbasa ngayon matutunghayan ang maikli ngunit maningning na kasaysayan ng mga propeta ng Israel. Tinutukoy ng Deut 18 ang damdamin ng mga taong kinakausap ng Panginoon. Hindi handa ang mga tao na makipagtalastasan na kaharap ang Diyos, dahil baka sila mamatay. Takot din silang marinig nang tahasan ang salitang banal o masaksihan nang personal ang mga kahanga-hangang gawain ng Panginoon. Sa halip, nagsusumamo silang magkaroon ng tagapamagitan, ng tagapa-gitna, ng tagapagsalita. At iyan ang propeta. Nagkaroon ng mga propeta ang Israel. HINDI ANG IYONG INAASAHAN Nitong nakalipas na Kapaskuhan, magiliw nating tinitigan ang Sanggol na si Hesus. Nakakataba ng pusong pagmasdan ang munting bata sa ating Belen, alaala ng madilim at malamig na yungib sa Betlehem. Natutulog ang sanggol na mapayapa, kuntento, buong tiwala at matimyas sa mapangalagang presensya ni Maria at Jose. Ngayon sa Pilipinas, bago tayo umusad sa karaniwang panahon, sinusulyapan naman natin ang Batang Hesus, hindi na sanggol dahil mas malaki na, isang imahen na napamahal sa ating mga puso bilang mga Pilipino. Umaapaw sa damdamin ang ating debosyon. Wala yatang altar sa bahay ng Pinoy na walang imahen o larawan ng Santo Nino. Ang Santo Nino ay bahagi ng pamilya, kapiling sa tirahan, kaugnay ng ating angkan. Subalit maraming beses, ang debosyon sa Santo Nino ay nagpapalambot ng ating pagtingin sa Diyos. NOT YOUR HARMLESS KID This past Christmas season, our eyes feasted on the image of the Baby Jesus. It is so heartwarming to behold this tiny figure on our Nativity display, transporting our minds to the cold, dark cave of Bethlehem. The infant sleeps so peacefully, contentedly, trustingly and just so sweetly in the secure presence of Mary and Joseph. Today in the Philippines, before we lunge into ordinary time again, we gaze on the image of the Holy Child Jesus, no longer the infant but a bit bigger, an image so dear to Filipinos everywhere. Our devotion overflows with sentimentality. No Filipino home altar is without its Child Jesus statue or picture. The Sto. Nino is part of the family, a resident in our home, a member of the brood. But many times, devotion to the Holy Child has a domesticating effect. We treat Jesus the whole year as a little child. We pray to him condescendingly, we imprison him in his cute clothes and ornaments and candy offerings. W

MULA SAKRISTAN HANGGANG PROPETA Kay gandang basahin ang salaysay mula sa 1 Sam 3. Sa katahimikan, sa kadiliman ng gabi, nagsalita ang Diyos sa musmos na si Samuel na tinawag niya upang maging propeta. Subalit sa simula, naguluhan ang bata at akala ang punong paring si Eli ang tumatawag. Nalito din si Eli at hindi naintindihan ang kaganapan. Maaaring nananaginip na naman ang batang si Samuel. Mahalagang maunawaan na sa panahong ito sinabing “bihira na” marinig ang tinig ng Diyos at ang mga pangitain mula sa kanya. Ibig sabihin hindi na naririnig ng mga tao ang salita ng Diyos, hindi dahil tumigil siyang magsalita kundi dahil nagkulang ang mga tao sa pakikinig. Si Eli ang kinatawan ng mga tao; matanda na siya at malabo ang mata at hirap nang makakita. Hindi pa siya bulag pero hindi na maaninaw ang mga tanda ng presensya ng Diyos. --> FROM SERVER TO PROPHET What a sweet and lovely account we have in our first reading (1 Sam. 3). In the silence, in the darkness of the night, the Lord God spoke to a little boy named Samuel. He called him by name and entrusted him with a mission. But first, the boy was disconcerted, thinking it was the high priest Eli who was calling him. Eli, too, was confused and did not understand what was happening. Maybe he thought, Samuel was dreaming, like little children do when they sleep. What is significant about this episode is the fact that at that time, it was said that the “word of God was scarce and vision infrequent” (v. 1). This means that people rarely heard God speaking, not because he stopped communicating but because the people failed to listen to his voice. BLESSED JOSE MARIA DE MANILA (Eugenio del Saz-Orozco Mortera ) May mga Pilipino pa na nasa hanay ng mga kandidatong inihahanda sa pormal na paghirang bilang Blessed at Santo. Sila ay mga lalaki at babaeng “Pinoy na Pinoy” sa puso at diwa na namuhay at namatay din nang may tunay na kabanalang ipinamalas.  Ang nasa hanay upang maging ikatlong Pilipinong santo ay ang paring si Fr. Jose Maria de Manila. Isa siyang Kastilang Pilipino na ipinanganak sa Maynila noong 1880. Ang kanyang amang si Don Eugenio Sanz-Orozco ang huling Espanyol na alkalde ng Maynila. Nag-aral siya sa Ateneo, sa Colegio de San Juan de Letran, at Unibersidad ng Santo Tomas (UST).  Nagpunta siya sa Spain upang mag-aral at doon ay nagpasyang pumasok sa seminaryo ng mga paring Franciscan Capuchin. Naging pari siya noong 1910.  Laging nasa puso niya ang pagbabalik sa Pilipinas subalit hindi na ito naganap pa. Nang magkaroon ng digmaang sibil sa Spain, naging matindi ang galit ng ilan

--> MGA REGALONG IBABAHAGI Dama ng karaniwang tao ang kaibahan ng Pasko dati at Pasko ngayon. Tila mas kaunti ang mga regalo. At naging mas simple din ang mga regalo. Mas mumurahin ang mga regalong ibinibigay at tinatanggap ngayon. Marami ding tao ang takot bumati man lamang ng Pasko dahil akala nila may kaakibat itong obligasyong magbigay ng regalo sa iba. Tanda na nga ito ng mas mahirap na situwasyon taun-taon. Subalit, anupaman, ang Pasko ay pista ng mga regalo, hindi lamang dahil ang mga pantas ang nagpasimula ng pagdadala ng handog sa Nino Hesus, kundi lalo’t higit dahil sa lubos na ibinunyag ng Diyos ang kanyang puso sa lahat ng tao sa pamamagitan ng kanyang Anak, ang ating Panginoong Hesukristo. Nahirapan ka bang mag-regalo ngayong Pasko? Nagbawas ka ba ng listahan ng reregaluhan? Umiwas o nagtago ka ba sa mga umaasa sa iyo? Natakot ka ba sa “regalong Pamasko”? --> GIFTS TO GIVE The ordinary man-in-the-street recognizes a difference between Christmas today and those in the past. The gifts have become scarce. The gifts have become simple. They have become less expensive, too. And many people even avoid the greetings of cheer in fear that these will mean an obligation to give a gift to someone. It is a sign of the hard times we have been experiencing year after year. Yet, Christmas remains the feast of gifts, not just because the Magi set the mark in giving presents to the Christ Child but, because God totally revealed the gift of his heart to all humanity through the coming of his Son Our Lord Jesus Christ.
